网络的全方位、超时空、互动性和隐蔽性为中学生的社会交往提供了更为广泛的机会。学生可以利用快捷的电子邮件与他人进行远距离交流，这种“戴面具”的交往方式可使中学生在平等、宽松的社交环境中尽情展现自我。调查显示，53%的人上网是为了向外发布信息。
但调查也发现，网络同其他事物一样，除了有利的一面，也给一些中学生带来困扰，如网络容易使少数自控力较差的中学生上瘾、间接和符号化的交往形式在一定程度上削弱了同他人面对面的交往机会和愿望、网络高技术容易使有的中学生对网络技术产生过度崇拜等。
调查认为，因特网的发展使对中学生的教育工作呈现新的特点，学校教育应该是网上育人与网下育人相结合，以促进中学生整体素质的提高。
