growth that starts from thinking
it seems to me a very difficult thing to put into words the beliefs we hold and what they make you do in your life. i think i was fortunate because i grew up in a family where there was a very deep religious feeling. i don’t think it was spoken of a great deal. it was more or less taken for granted that everybody held certain beliefs and needed certain reinforcements of their own strength and that that came through your belief in god and your knowledge of prayer.
but as i grew older i questioned a great many of the things that i knew very well my grandmother who had brought me up had taken for granted. and i think i might have been a quite difficult person to live with if it hadn’t been for the fact that my husband once said it didn’t do you any harm to learn those things, so why not let your children learn them? when they grow up they’ll think things out for themselves.
and that gave me a feeling that perhaps that’s what we all must do—think out for ourselves what we could believe and how we could live by it. and so i came to the conclusion that you had to use this life to develop the very best that you could develop.
i don’t know whether i believe in a future life. i believe that all that you go through here must have some value, therefore there must be some reason. and there must be some “going on.” how exactly that happens i’ve never been able to decide. there is a future—that i’m sure of. but how, that i don’t know. and i came to feel that it didn’t really matter very much because whatever the future held you’d have to face it when you came to it, just as whatever life holds you have to face it exactly the same way. and the important thing was that you never let down doing the best that you were able to do—it might be poor because you might not have very much within you to give, or to help other people with, or to live your life with. but as long as you did the very best that you were able to do, then that was what you were put here to do and that was what you were accomplishing by being here.
and so i have tried to follow that out—and not to worry about the future or what was going to happen. i think i am pretty much of a fatalist. you have to accept whatever comes and the only important thing is that you meet it with courage and with the best that you have to give.
the knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. you will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more to me than any qualification i ever earned.
so given a time turner, i would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement. your qualifications, your cv, are not your life, though you will meet many people of my age and older who confuse the two. life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes.
you might think i chose my second theme, the importance of imagination, because of the part it played in rebuilding my life, but that is not wholly so. though i personally will defend the value of bedtime stories to my last gasp, i have learned to value imagination in a much broader sense. imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. in its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathise with humans whose experiences we have never shared.
what makes me feel big
j. frank dobie
“my mind is big when i look at you and talk to you,” chief eagle of the pawnees said to george bird grinnell when, after years of absence, that noble writer appeared at his friend’s tepee.
it is very difficult in drawing up a credo to be severely honest about one’s self, to avoid all traditional cant. we actually believe in what we value most. outside of the realms of carnality and property, which men appearing in public generally pretend not to notice, i believe in and draw nourishment from whatever makes me feel big.
i believe in a supreme power, unknowable and impersonal, whose handiwork the soul-enlarging firmament declares. however, i believe in questionings, doubtings, searchings, skepticism, and i discredit credu lity or blind faith. the progress of man is based on disbelief of the commonly accepted. the noblest minds and natures of human history have thought and sung, lived and died, trying to budge the status quo towards a larger and fuller status.
i am sustained by a belief in evolution—the increasing purpose of life in which the rational is, with geological slowness, evolving out of the irrational. to believe that goodness and wisdom and righteousness, in garden of eden perfection, lie somewhere far ahead instead of farther and farther behind, gives me hope and somewhat explains existence. this is a long view. i do not pretend that it is a view always present in me. it does raise me when i have it, however.
i feel no resentment so strongly as that against forces which make men and women afraid to speak out forthrightly. the noblest satisfaction i have is in witnessing the up movement of suppressed individuals and people. i make no pretense to having rid myself of all prejudices, but at times when i have discovered myself freed from certain prejudices, i have felt rare exhilaration.
for me, the beautiful resides in the physical, but it is spiritual. i have never heard a sermon as spiritual in either phrase or fact as, “waters on a starry night are beautiful and free.” no hymn lifts my heart higher than the morning call of the bobwhite or the long fluting cry of sandhill cranes out of the sky at dusk. i have never smelled incense in a church as refining to the spirit as a spring breeze laden with aroma from a field of bluebonnets.
not all hard truths are beautiful, but beauty is truth. it incorporates love and is incorporated by love. it is the goal of all great art. its presence everywhere makes it free to all. it is not so abstract as justice, but beauty and intellectual freedom and justice, all incorporating truth and goodness, are constant sustainers to my mind and spirit.

Stay True to Yourself
But my idea of success is different today. And as you grow, you'll realise the definition of success changes. For many of you, today, success is being able to hold down 20 shots of tequila. For me, the most important thing in your life is to live your life with integrity, and not to give into peer pressure; to try to be something that you're not. To live your life as an honest and compassionate person; to contribute in some way. So to conclude my conclusion: follow your Passion, stay true to yourself. Never follow anyone else's path, unless you're in the woods and you're lost and you see a path, and by all means you should follow that. Don't give advice, it will come back and bite you in the ass. Don't take anyone's advice. So my advice to you is to be true to yourself and everything will be fine.
And I know that a lot of you are concerned about your future, but there's no need to worry. The economy is booming, the job market is wide open, the planet is just fine It's gonna be great. You've already survived a hurricane What else can happen to you? And as I mentioned before, some of the most devastating things that happen to you will teach you the most. And now you know the right questions to ask in your first job interview. Like, "Is it above sea level?". So to conclude my conclusion that I've previously concluded, in the common cement speech, I guess what I'm trying to say is life is like one big Mardi Gras. But instead of showing your boobs, show people your brain, and if they like what they see, you'll have more beads than you know what to do with. And you'll be drunk, most of the time.

Feelings, Failure and Finding Happiness
The world has so many lessons to teach you. I consider the world, this Earth, to be like a school and our life the classrooms. And sometimes here in this Planet Earth school the lessons often come dressed up as detours or roadblocks. And sometimes as full-blown crises. And the secret I've learned to getting ahead is being open to the lessons, lessons from the grandest university of all, that is, the universe itself. It's being able to walk through life eager and open to self-improvement and that which is going to best help you evolve, because that's really why we're here, to evolve as human beings. To grow into more of ourselves, always moving to the next level of understanding, the next level of compassion and growth.
I think about one of the greatest compliments I've ever received: I interviewed with a reporter when I was first starting out in Chicago. And then many years later, I saw the same reporter. And she said to me, "You know what? You really haven't changed. You've just become more of yourself."
And that is really what we're all trying to do, become more of ourselves. And I believe that there's a lesson in almost everything that you do and every experience, and getting the lesson is how you move forward. It's how you enrich your spirit. And, trust me, I know that inner wisdom is more precious than wealth. The more you spend it, the more you gain.

Tribute to Diana
There is no doubt that she was looking for a new direction in her life at this away from England, mainly because of the treatment that she received at the hands of the newspapers. I don't think she ever understood why her genuinely good intentions were sneered at by the media, why there appeared to be a permanent quest on their behalf to bring her down. It is baffling.
My own and only explanation is that genuine goodness is threatening to those at the opposite end of the moral spectrum. It is a point to those at the opposite end of the moral spectrum. It is a point to remember that of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest was this a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age.
She would want us today to pledge ourselves to protecting her beloved boys William and Harry from a similar fate and I do this here Diana on your behalf. We will not allow them to suffer the anguish that used regularly to drive you to tearful despair.
And beyond that, on behalf of your mother and sisters, I pledge that we, your blood family, will do all we can to continue the imaginative way in which you were steering these two exceptional young men so that their souls are not simply immersed by duty and tradition but can sing openly as you planned.

"I dread to come to the end of the year, said a friend to me recently, "it makes me realize I am growing old.”
William James, the great psychologist, said that most men are "old fogies at twenty-fiveHe was right. Most men at twenty-five are satisfied with their jobs. They have accumulated the little stock of prejudices that they call their "Principles, " and closed their minds to all new ideas; they have ceased to grow.
The minutea man ceases to grow-no matter what his years-that minute he begins to be old. On the other hand, the really great man never grows old.
Goethe passed out at eighty-three, and finished his Faust only a few years earlier; Gladstone took up a new language when he was seventy. Laplace, the astronomer, was still at work when death caught up with him at seventy-eight. He died crying, "What we know is nothing; what we do not know is immense."
And there you have the real answer to the question, "When is a man old?"
Laplace at seventy-eight died young. He was still unsatisfied, still sure that he had a lot to learn.
As long as a man can keep himself in that attitude of mind, as long as he can look back on every year and say , "I grew," he is still young.
The minute he ceases to grow, the minute he says to himself, "I know all that I need to know,"--that day youth stops. He may be twenty-five or seventy-five, it makes no difference. On that day he begins to be old.

There is no better school than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve my performance next time. Never again will I contribute to my downfall by refusing to face the truth and learn from my past mistakes. Because I know: gems cannot shine without polish, and I can not perfect myself without hardship.
Always will I seek the seed of triumph in every adversity.
I am better prepared , now ,to deal with any adversity . No matter what fate has in store for me to know that I will relish it or I will suffer it for only a brief, brief time.So very few understand this obvious truth while the rest allow their hopes and goals to vanish as soon as tragedy strikes. These unfortunately people carry with them, until they die their own bed of thorms and look to others. every day, for sympathy and attention.Adversity will never destroy the person with courage and faith
Always will I seek the seed of triumph in every adversity.
Now I know that there are no times in life when opportunity, the chance to be and do gathers so richly about my soul as when it has to suffer cruel adversity. Then everything depends on whether I raise my head or lower it in seeking help. Whenever I am struck down, in the future, by any terrible defeat, I will inquire of myself, after the first pain has passed, how I can turn that adversity into good. What a great opportunity that moment may present……to make the bitter root I am holding and transform it into fragrant garden of flowers.
Always will I seek the seed of triumph in every adversity.

Life is like a big swing, dangling between the depths of happiness and sadness. As soon as we descend down the slope of sadness, we accelerate over the ever-feel-good acclivity f happiness. At times of distress, when we are down we slip over an abyss of emotional trauma and frustrations. One who can rise above the occasion, is the architect of many wins over sorrows.
To come above tougher times you have to pep yourself up, when you are feeling low, lost and confused. This can be done effectively by self-talk. Self-talk is a way of talking to oneself. It can be effectively used for soul searching. When talking to ourselves, we hardly lie as our conscience controls our speech. Self talk is efficient because when we are vocal about our thoughts, it makes a larger impact on our mind. Our brain then receives the same message from the mind as well as the ears. This repetition pep talks and thoughts fine tunes the performance of brain.
Self-talk is a software, which when properly loaded onto our mind directs ourselves for better results and a healthy mind. Actually many times in our life, we find others advising us to do better in studies, sports, life etc. We usually get bugged by these people and blank our ears out of their constructive suggestions. It is because it doesn't come from within us. And when something comes from within you, you always try your best to do justice to it. Self-talk can thus ameliorate our status.
Each one of us has some good points and some bad ones. Though we hardly admit in pubic, we know in our mind that we could do better in some areas of our personal landscape. This get better attitude can be converted into a practical reality using self-talk.
If you are an introvert and you want to be the gregarious person like you friend next door, all you need to do is talk to yourself. Tell yourself with all the sincerity and emotions that "I can be like him. I am a natural born speaker. I do like people and speaking comes naturally to me. I just have to be ready to listen and speak". Suppose you love a person and want to tell him or her, then just say to yourselves "I love her with all my heart. She is the only one and I know it. If I don't let her know, it would be grave injustice on my part. Every person loves to be loved. Even she will". These are just some examples I have explained. It's up to you to program your own mantra.
If you are highly optimistic to do better, there is no better motivator than self-talk. So guys start talking.

life grows in the soil of time
what i believe, what i value most, is transitoriness.
but is not transitoriness - the perishableness of life - something very sad? no! it is the verysoul of existence. it imparts value, dignity, interest to life. transitoriness creates time - and"time is the essence." potentially at least, time is the supreme, most useful gift.
time is related to - yes, identical with - everything creative and active, every process towarda higher goal.
without transitoriness, without beginning or end, birth or death, there is no time, either.timelessness - in the sense of time never ending, never beginning - is a stagnant nothing. it isabsolutely uninteresting.
life is possessed by tremendous tenacity. even so its presence remains conditional, and asit had a beginning, so it will have an end. i believe that life, just for this reason, is exceedinglyenhanced in value, in charm.
one of the most important characteristics distinguishing man from all other forms of nature ishis knowledge of transitoriness, of beginning and end, and therefore of the gift of time.
in man transitory life attains its peak of animation, of soul power, so to speak. this does notmean alone would have a soul. soul quality pervades all beings. but man's soul is most awakein his knowledge of the interchangeability of the term "existence" and "transitoriness".
to man time is given like a piece of land, as it were, entrusted to him for faithful tilling; a spacein which to strive incessantly, achieve self-realization, more onward and upward. yes, with theaid of time, man becomes capable of wresting the immortal from the mortal.
deep down, i believe - and deem such belief natural to every human soul - that in the universityprime significance must be attributed to this earth of ours. deep down i believe that creation ofthe universe out of nothingness and of life out of inorganic state ultimately aimed at thecreation of man. i believe that man is meant as a great experiment whose possible failure ofman's own guilt would be paramount to the failure of creation itself.
whether this belief be true or not, man would be well advised if he behaved as though it were.

life is like a big swing, dangling between the depths of happiness and sadness. as soon as we descend down the slope of sadness, we accelerate over the ever-feel-good acclivity f happiness. at times of distress, when we are down we slip over an abyss of emotional trauma and frustrations. one who can rise above the occasion, is the architect of many wins over sorrows.
to come above tougher times you have to pep yourself up, when you are feeling low, lost and confused. this can be done effectively by self-talk. self-talk is a way of talking to oneself. it can be effectively used for soul searching. when talking to ourselves, we hardly lie as our conscience controls our speech. self talk is efficient because when we are vocal about our thoughts, it makes a larger impact on our mind. our brain then receives the same message from the mind as well as the ears. this repetition pep talks and thoughts fine tunes the performance of brain.
self-talk is a software, which when properly loaded onto our mind directs ourselves for better results and a healthy mind. actually many times in our life, we find others advising us to do better in studies, sports, life etc. we usually get bugged by these people and blank our ears out of their constructive suggestions. it is because it doesn't come from within us. and when something comes from within you, you always try your best to do justice to it. self-talk can thus ameliorate our status.
each one of us has some good points and some bad ones. though we hardly admit in pubic, we know in our mind that we could do better in some areas of our personal landscape. this get better attitude can be converted into a practical reality using self-talk.
if you are an introvert and you want to be the gregarious person like you friend next door, all you need to do is talk to yourself. tell yourself with all the sincerity and emotions that "i can be like him. i am a natural born speaker. i do like people and speaking comes naturally to me. i just have to be ready to listen and speak". suppose you love a person and want to tell him or her, then just say to yourselves "i love her with all my heart. she is the only one and i know it. if i don't let her know, it would be grave injustice on my part. every person loves to be loved. even she will". these are just some examples i have explained. it's up to you to program your own mantra.
if you are highly optimistic to do better, there is no better motivator than self-talk. so guys start talking.

there is no better school than adversity. every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve my performance next time. never again will i contribute to my downfall by refusing to face the truth and learn from my past mistakes. because i know: gems cannot shine without polish, and i can not perfect myself without hardship.
always will i seek the seed of triumph in every adversity.
i am better prepared , now ,to deal with any adversity . no matter what fate has in store for me to know that i will relish it or i will suffer it for only a brief, brief time.so very few understand this obvious truth while the rest allow their hopes and goals to vanish as soon as tragedy strikes. these unfortunately people carry with them, until they die their own bed of thorms and look to others. every day, for sympathy and attention.adversity will never destroy the person with courage and faith
always will i seek the seed of triumph in every adversity.
now i know that there are no times in life when opportunity, the chance to be and do gathers so richly about my soul as when it has to suffer cruel adversity. then everything depends on whether i raise my head or lower it in seeking help. whenever i am struck down, in the future, by any terrible defeat, i will inquire of myself, after the first pain has passed, how i can turn that adversity into good. what a great opportunity that moment may present……to make the bitter root i am holding and transform it into fragrant garden of flowers.
always will i seek the seed of triumph in every adversity.
